LESOTHO COUNCIL OF NGOS (LCN) - JOB DESCRIPTION FOR THE DEMOCRACY AND HUMAN RIGHTS COORDINATOR

Position description
The position of Project Coordinator is created within the philosophical framework of LCN. LCN’s work is carried out by staffs that operate as a team within the confines of the Council’s hierarchy as indicated by the LCN organizational structure. The Democracy and Human Rights Coordinator together with the rest of the staff carry out their activities based on the principles of respect, justice, equity and participatory democracy within the overall purposes of the Council as an umbrella organization of all NGO community in Lesotho. This work is carried out under the policy direction of the Board and Executive Committee guided by the LCN Constitution.

The Democracy and Human Rights Coordinator supervises the activities of Democracy and Human Rights Commission Programme. The Democracy and Human Rights Coordinator takes a leading role under supervision of the Executive Director in ensuring that the work of Democracy and Human Rights Commission is carried out efficiently and effectively with the primary goal of building a strong and dynamic democracy and human rights NGO community involvement in democratic governance initiatives. The Democracy and Human Rights Commission Programme’s objective is to improve the capacity of democracy and human rights organizations to respond to human rights abuses and support the building of a strong democracy and democratic governance in Lesotho through coordination, training and advocacy.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

 A firm and committed person on issues of socio-economic and political justice development
 A firm believer in NGO capacity to deliver with experience in NGO work
 Be an advocate of grassroots participatory democracy and development
 A person with excellent interpersonal skills and be ready to team work with a diverse group of people
 A creative and innovative person who is able to come up with ideas for the project improvement
 A strategic person who is able to influence and lobby for the cause of NGO community
 A person with ability to lobby and advocate social transformation
 A resourceful, hard working, adaptable and flexible person with interpersonal and intercultural communication skills
 A person that has demonstrated skill in report writing and documentation, analytical abilities, public speaking, and computer competence.


JOB DESCRIPTION
  • To coordinate the democracy and human rights NGOs participating in the Democracy and Human Rights Commission,
  • Develop democracy and human rights monitoring guide for Lesotho,
  • To build and strengthen the capacity of civil society organisations working in democracy and human rights in areas of democratic governance and elections management, human rights research and lobbying and advocacy,
  • Develop IEC material on democracy and human rights targeting NGOs and their beneficiaries,
  • Research human rights violations and advice the Democracy and Human Rights Commission on issues that needs advocacy
  • Issue action alert on Democracy and Human Rights violation in Lesotho
  • Establish and maintain networking both locally and internationally for solidarity support and collective redressing of democracy and human rights violation in Lesotho,
  • Produce the human rights shadow report on Lesotho,
  • Organise public forums on national issues related to democracy and human rights,
  • Ensure project reporting on the status of project indicators, critical milestone, risks and changes to key factors such as implementation, timing, resource allocation
  • To ensure project delivers on time in line with project proposal
  • Ensure a consistent process and approach across the project implementation
  • Ensure project update and reporting in key indicators
  • Ensure that the project performs its work properly and is well accounted for to the Executive Director
  • Analyse and provide project solutions that ensures project continuity
  • Develop and maintain positive working relations with all LCN partners inside and outside the country

Notwithstanding the above stated duties and responsibilities, the Executive Director reserves the right to vary and add to these functions from time to time as may be dictated by the needs and operations of the Council.


Requirement: LLB with international law
Experience and knowledge of NGO community essential
