Womens
legal rights and political empowerment get a boost through new
projects organised by the Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) in
Lesotho |
FIDA are set to make an
impact on womens legal rights and political empowerment through two
new projects funded by USAID and AUSAID.
The first project is the Paralegal Training Project which is funded
by the Womens Legal Rights Initiative, USAID. The project seeks to
identify and train active community members in specialised skills
and hence avail legal aid at community level.
“We have chosen people in leadership roles such as chiefs, youth
groups, various support groups and small business entrepreneurs to
receive the training.’ said Paballo
Kotela, the Project Co-ordinator. The project also promotes
community participation in human rights activities. This project is
a two year project.
The second project is the ‘Empowerment of women to Participate
meaningfully in Local Government post elections and play a
meaningful role as councilors in Local Government. The project is
funded by the Australian Government AUSAID and its objective is to
support the governments call on the empowerment of women, education
and training of elected women councilors on good governance and
lastly to foster understanding of and confidence in the legality of
the Local Government Elections Act.
