At a meeting at the
Convention Centre in Maseru on the 31st January, 2006 between NGOs,
the National Environment Secretariat and UNDP an announcement was
made by Me Lineo Khubelu Mdee, Head of Division of Environment and
Energy of UNDP, that Lesotho have been successful in their
application to the Global Environment Funds, Small Grants Scheme.
The fund will enable NGOs to apply for up to US$50,000 for projects
that will respond to global environmental protection. Funds will be
provided for projects that;
- Stem Biodiversity
Loss
- Reduce Climate
Change
- Eliminate Persistent
Organic Pollutants
- Prevent Land
Degradation and Desertification
- Protection of
International Waters
A national steering
committee has been formed that consists of 50% representation of
NGOs, who will judge the suitability of the submitted projects. The
UN will soon be sending a mission to assess the suitability of
Lesotho for the scheme. More information will be available soon as
to how to apply for the grants.
