News In Brief: Global Environment Fund for Lesotho.
At a meeting at the Convention Centre in Maseru on the 31st January, 2006 between NGOs, the National Environment Secretariat and UNDP an announcement was made by Me Lineo Khubelu Mdee, Head of Division of Environment and Energy of UNDP, that Lesotho have been successful in their application to the Global Environment Funds, Small Grants Scheme. The fund will enable NGOs to apply for up to US$50,000 for projects that will respond to global environmental protection. Funds will be provided for projects that;
  • Stem Biodiversity Loss
  • Reduce Climate Change
  • Eliminate Persistent Organic Pollutants
  • Prevent Land Degradation and Desertification
  • Protection of International Waters

A national steering committee has been formed that consists of 50% representation of NGOs, who will judge the suitability of the submitted projects. The UN will soon be sending a mission to assess the suitability of Lesotho for the scheme. More information will be available soon as to how to apply for the grants.
