27/02/07 Press Release
Lesotho Council of NGOs will hold two day workshop on Biotechnology, Biosafety and Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) from the 28th February, 2007 to 1st March 2007 at the Transformation Resource Centre (TRC).

The workshop is aimed at creating awareness and sharing information on Biotechnology, Biosafety and Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) with the participants. It also intends at looking at the policy and laws governing the introduction and use of GMO materials in the country.

Participation is drawn from Agriculture, Environment and Natural Resources Commission members and Participatory Ecological Land Use Management members.

Facilitation has been sourced from the National University of Lesotho, Department of Environment, Department of crops and livestock and the Ministry of Trade, Industry, Marketing and Cooperatives.

It is expected that participants will impart the knowledge gained to Community Based Organisations (CBOs), Faith Based Organisations and other farming communities in the country.

Meanwhile Agriculture, Environment and Natural Resource Commission (AENRC) is a group of member NGOs committed to sustainable agriculture, food security, sustainable livelihoods and conservation of the natural environment in Lesotho. Some of the member organisations have a specific remit of agriculture and natural resource management, but the majority are NGOs that see the work of the commission as a way of assisting their membership and clients out of poverty.

This workshop is funded by a programme called the Civil Society Support Programme (CSSP), funded by a consortium of donors – UK Department for International Development, Irish Aid, W. K. Kellogg Foundation and Open Society of Southern Africa.
