Lesotho Council of NGOs
will hold two day workshop on Biotechnology, Biosafety and
Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) from the 28th February, 2007
to 1st March 2007 at the Transformation Resource Centre (TRC).
The workshop is aimed at creating awareness and sharing information
on Biotechnology, Biosafety and Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs)
with the participants. It also intends at looking at the policy and
laws governing the introduction and use of GMO materials in the
country.
Participation is drawn from Agriculture, Environment and Natural
Resources Commission members and Participatory Ecological Land Use
Management members.
Facilitation has been sourced from the National University of
Lesotho, Department of Environment, Department of crops and
livestock and the Ministry of Trade, Industry, Marketing and
Cooperatives.
It is expected that participants will impart the knowledge gained to
Community Based Organisations (CBOs), Faith Based Organisations and
other farming communities in the country.
Meanwhile Agriculture, Environment and Natural Resource Commission (AENRC)
is a group of member NGOs committed to sustainable agriculture, food
security, sustainable livelihoods and conservation of the natural
environment in Lesotho. Some of the member organisations have a
specific remit of agriculture and natural resource management, but
the majority are NGOs that see the work of the commission as a way
of assisting their membership and clients out of poverty.
This workshop is funded by a programme called the Civil Society
Support Programme (CSSP), funded by a consortium of donors – UK
Department for International Development, Irish Aid, W. K. Kellogg
Foundation and Open Society of Southern Africa.
