The Honourable Acting
Minister of Justice Human Rights and Rehabilitation and of Law and
Constitutional Affairs the honourable Deputy Prime Minister and
Minister of Home Affairs: Honourable Lesao Lehohla says the
government of Lesotho has been concerned at the situation of
incidences of human rights violations wherever they occur and there
are a number of institutions which have been established that seek
to safeguard the interests of every person whose rights are at stake
in Lesotho.
The Deputy Prime Minister said this when delivering a keynote
address at a four day workshop on Human Rights Monitoring at the
Palace HThe Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs and also Minister of
Local Government, Dr. Matumelo Ponts’o Sekatle says NGOs and the
government should join handsotel in Berea which started on the 17th and ending on the
20th October 2005. The Workshop is organized by Lesotho Council of
NGOs (LCN).
He added that Non Governmental Organisation (NGOs) have a crucial
role to play in education and monitoring the abuse of human rights
by working in conjunction with the various institutions. ‘The
government of Lesotho welcomes your involvement”.
The objective of the workshop is to equip NGOs and other governments
departments with human rights monitoring skills and to develop a
monitoring tool. The workshop participants are also expected develop
a strategic work plan on human rights monitoring and to develop
human rights awareness plan.
Meanwhile, LCN’s Human Rights Monitoring Programme commenced its
work on the 1st of September 2005. It is aimed at building the civil
society which respects human rights and the civil society which is
armed to teeth in issues of human rights, promoting and protecting
human rights violations against the state, non-state actors and
individual persons in Lesotho.
