The Lesotho Council of
NGOs has issued out an amount of M42, 216.00 to two of its member
NGOs that are implementing its Human Rights Monitoring project.
The implementing NGOs that have received the funding for now are
Lesotho Youth Federation and Lesotho Clothing and Allied Workers
Union will be monitoring issues of youth and gender equality and
workers’ rights respectively for five months. The four remaining
NGOs will be given the money as soon as they have met the
requirement.
There are yet other pending activities which need to be monitored
and those include rights of the disabled and rights of the detained
persons.
The programme of human rights monitoring commenced on the 1st
September, 2005 and is expected to end by August 2006 with the
following objectives;
- Building the
capacity of human rights commission of the Lesotho Council of
NGOs,
- Carrying out and
coordinating human rights monitoring in Lesotho,
- Building the
capacity of human rights organisations in Lesotho to carry out
human rights monitoring work in conjunction with LCN and
initiating programme activities for future human rights monitoring
work in Lesotho.
The programme is
further aimed at preparing the Lesotho Council of NGOs to establish
a dedicated human rights team within the Human Rights and Democracy
Commission.
By the end of the programme human rights situation analysis report
would be published for distribution in the country, human rights
organisations throughout the world, African Union (AU) Human Rights
Commission and United Nations Human Rights Commission.
It is expected that the report would set a baseline for advocacy
strategies on human rights issues in Lesotho.
