Lesotho Council of NGO’s Board of Directors has admitted 16 new NGOs
as members of LCN today (01/03/06).
The 16 NGOs, joins more than 65 members of the council that have
been effective and efficient vehicles in the developmental efforts
in the country. The NGOs are playing an active role in the nation’s
development processes and they had significant contributions as
catalysts of development in areas such as healthcare, education,
skill acquisition etc. Some made impact felt in development areas
like advocacy, awareness campaign, community empowerment and human
rights.
Lesotho NGOs are essential ingredient in the development process and
many development actors consider them to be generally more efficient
than the government in rendering emergency relief assistance and
even in the implementation of developmental projects. The new
members included NGOs that are focused in transport issues, ICT and
Olympics.
Meanwhile, LCN was established in May 1990 as an umbrella body for
Lesotho NGOS. The main objective for which LCN is established is to
provide supportive services to the NGO community in Lesotho through
networking, leadership, information dissemination, capacity
building, coordination, advocacy and lobbying, and representation of
Lesotho NGOs when dealing with international community and
government. The Council’s mission is to stimulate, promote and build
capacity within Lesotho NGO’s so that they are stable, democratic,
transparent, skilled, empowered, sustainable and responsive to their
beneficiaries’ needs and those of the voiceless and marginalized in
society.
LCN Board of Directors controls and directs the Council, and is made
up of the Executive Committee and Six Commissioners of Sectoral
Commissions. The Executive Committee of the Council is made up of
the President, Vice-President, Treasurer and Executive Director.
