Meeting
with OSISA 18/05/06 |
The Open Society Initiative for Southern Africa known as OSISA has
held various meetings with different stakeholders in conjunction
with its partner LCN from the 18th - 19th May 2006 on understanding
issues pertaining to democracy in Lesotho.
Among the stakeholders were leaders of political parties in Lesotho
where the objective was to find issues pertaining to democracy in
Lesotho. In that meeting it was resolved among other things that
there is a need for capacity building for political parties in
Lesotho which OSISA has agreed to fund in collaboration with its
partner LCN.
Another meeting was held with the Lesotho Law Society where also
OSISA showed interest especially in activities which affect the
civil society. The project shall be implemented in the next year.
The Lesotho Council of NGOs and the Law Society have also
established working relations especially under human rights since
the two institutions share the same sentiments. In the meantime,
OSISA has agreed to fund the strategic planning for the Law Society
to a tune of R300, 000.00 which is soon to take place.
Meanwhile, OSISA is the sponsor of human rights monitoring progamme
of LCN. The programme is aimed at monitoring, identifying and
addressing violations in various government institutions in a view
to enhance democratic rule in Lesotho. The programme comprises of
training, monitoring, documenting, educating and reporting of human
rights violations.
The programme commenced in September 2005 and by the end of the
programme human rights situation analysis report would be published
for distribution in the country, human rights organisations
throughout the world, African Union (AU) Human Rights Commission and
United Nations Human Rights Commission.
It is expected that the report would set a baseline for advocacy
strategies on human rights issues in Lesotho. |
