Lesotho Youth Federation
will kick off its Youth Behavioural Change, Communication and
HIV/AIDS Destigmatisation Outreach Programme at Lekokoaneng (Berea)
on the 28th – 29th September, then Maphuts’eng in (Mohale’ s Hoek)
will follow on the 4th – 5th November while the last one will be in
Ts’ehlanyana in Leribe from 11th – 12th 2006.
The programme is an integrated attempt to advocate for behavioural
change communication among youth and adolescents as the alternative
preventive strategy against the scourge of HIV/AIDS. The programme
aims at emphasising behavioural change and positive lifestyle
through trainings and/or consolidated sports and cultural
activities. Sports and cultural activities are a campaigning
strategy in the rural areas in Lesotho namely, Lekokoaneng (TY),
Tsehlanyane (Leribe) and Maphutseng (Mohale’s Hoek). There shall be
two regional youth camps.
Inherent within the strategic approach of the project is the
destigmatisation intended to defeat the HIV/AIDS stigma which to a
large extent undermine the preventive and treatment measures such as
voluntary testing and counselling silence-breaking etc.
The overall goal is to advocate and intensify behavioural change
among young people in Lesotho as the alternative preventive strategy
against further HIV/AIDS infection and spread.
Specific Objectives
- To empower young
people on behavioural change and destigmatisation through
trainings, sports activities and integrated cultural/traditional
activities
- To empower young
people on the principles of positive lifestyle
- To advocate for
policy change on the national strategy among young people against
HIV/AIDS so as to emphasise on the behavioural change as the
alternative preventive strategy against further spread of the
pandemic in Lesotho.
- To build the Youth
Charter on Communication for Behavioural Change and
Destigmatisation among young people in Lesotho as the guiding
instrument on behavioural change
The project targets at young people within the age range of 15-35
years of age. Whilst the programme targets young people in the
general context, but it basically aims at organized youth for
sustainability and the nature of the project. About 40 young people
from each of the two regions in Lesotho will benefit from the
training on the behavioural change. 1,500 young people are targeted
for each of the two outdoor activities for infusing the behavioral
change campaign with sporting activities (games and cultural
activity)
It is expected at the end of the project that young people fully
understand the principles and guidelines of behavioural change and
positive lifestyle as the alternative preventive strategy against
the further infection of HIV/AIDS in Lesotho.
