LECAWU
holds a training for Shop Stewards |
Lesotho Clothing and
Allied Workers Union (LECAWU) is holding a three day workshop
targeting Shop Stewards to equip them with skills in health, safety
and environment from different textile factories in Maseru, Mafeteng
and Maputsoe held at the Lakeside Hotel in Maseru. The workshop
started on the 20th and will end on the 22nd of April 2006.
It has come into LECAWU’s attention that the industrial development
of Lesotho has generated opportunities for disadvantaged Basotho but
on the other hand has posed a great risk of safety, health and
environmental negative impacts upon workforces and communities
living around the industrial areas, which is totally against the
internal statutory requirements.
In an interview with a participant, Ms. Mpoetsi Maliea from a
Factory called Export in Maputsoe said the training has provided her
with an eye opening tool for striving towards ensuring that there
are health and safety measures at their workplaces and to maintain a
world class standard level.
“It is going to be highly difficult for us to influence our
management on some of the measures that are needed at the workplace
but we would try our best in negotiating some of them that comes
with great health hazards e.g the use of chemicals without using
nose masks and gloves”, she said.
In a short interview with LECAWU General Secretary, Mr. Daniel
Maraisane said the main plan for this workshop is to minimize the
rate in which the factory workers are being exposed to unhealthy
conditions which some of could have been avoided.
Twenty Shop Stewards are attending the workshop and it is LECAWU’s
hope that they would be able to introduce good health and safety
measures when they get back to their companies and the union will
assist in anyway it can to make sure that the workers are protected.
