Forestry in Lesotho
Vision for Forestry in Lesotho

By 2020, Forestry sector would have covered 5% of land area with forests, Providing long term and sound environment, which secures livelihoods and diversifies forest produce aimed at reducing the influx of foreign forest products and also create employment opportunities.

Mission

Lesotho is committed to putting 5% of total land area under production and protection of forests, while also promoting management of indigenous forest in an attempt to ensuring energy security, income generation as a means of economic growth and investment in partnership with all stake holders

Policy

It is the policy of the Government of Lesotho to maximise, through actions consistent with other stated policies and development goals, the contribution that forests can make to the alleviation of poverty, livelihood security and environmental protection in Lesotho, and to enhance the participation of women in this endeavour with regard to the following objectives:
  • To increase the area of land under tree cover (exotic and indigenous) established and owned by local people either individually or communally including business sector.
  • To sensitise and educate the public on values, purposes and benefits of forestry.
  • To develop forest resources and promote forest industries to make the best use of them for generating employment, income generation and for reducing imports.
  • To promote the use of trees in support of conservation and production of both arable agriculture and rangelands and in particular the use of trees and other woody shrubs to ensure soil conservation and improvement of catchment areas
  • To achieve sustainable management of Government owned forest reserves in participation with and for the benefit of local people.
  • To undertake and foster appropriate research in all aspects of forestry, including indigenous vegetation, to maximise the benefits of forestry and to document, publish and disseminate research findings.
  • To encourage beekeeping and bee-keeping industry by individuals and interest groups in order to facilitate efficient cross pollination and ensure adequate supply of honey.
